One week after the fastest mass finish in a boys 3,000 meters race in state history, a fast mile Friday at the Nike Jesuit Twilight Relays made for another watershed moment for high school distance runners in Oregon.

Caleb Lakeman ran 4:04.46 to win an entertaining boys elite mile race in cool, drizzly conditions at Jesuit High and he exceeded his dad's best high school time of 4:04.9. Dirk Lakeman, who ran that time in 1977, held the Oregon all-time best in the event for 27 years until Galen Rupp broke it in 2004.

Lakeman's time is the fastest ever by an Oregon prep in a high-school only race, but what's more remarkable is what happened behind him.

Twelve boys, including nine from Oregon, ran under 4:10 in the mile. All 12 now ran in the top 20 in the country.

Isaac Teeples from Kamiakin WA was second in 4:05.55, edging past Franklin's Charlie North (4:05.61) for second. Aiden Emerson of Arlington WA was fourth, Michael Maiorano from South Medford was fifth, Wes Shipsey of Central Catholic was sixth, Aiden Smith of Lincoln was seventh -- all crossing the line under 4:07.

Freshman Josiah Tostenson of Crater broke the freshman class national record with 4:09.11, eclipsing the ninth-grade best of 4:09.38 by Eli Krahn of Stillwater MN in 2013.

Five in the race registered 1,500-meter en route times under 3:50, led by Lakeman's 3:49.08.

Elite performances were all over the place on a day that brought the Twilight Relays back to Jesuit for the first time since 2019.

Sophia Beckmon helped Oregon City win the girls team championship by breaking the state's wind-legal outdoor long jump record with 19 feet, 11 inches.

Emma Gates of Cascade smashed the meet record in the high jump with a clearance at US#2 6-0.25 and then raised the bar for three attempts at 6-1.25 -- a bar that would exceed the Oregon all-time best by a quarter inch.

In the girls 100 meters, Lake Oswego's Mia Brahe-Pedersen needed every bit of the runway to reach her top speed and run down Roosevelt's Lily Jones as the duo raced for the third consecutive weekend. Brahe-Pedersen ran 11.45 and Jones ran 11.46 in a race that does wonders to magnify the intrigue ahead of a potential state finals showdown.

Jesuit's star senior Chloe Foerster demonstated resolve and pride in the girls mile. Foerster went out hard over the first lap only to see a big lead vanish in the late stages of the race. She needed to dig deep to comeback and secure the victory over Franklin's Kaiya Robertson, 4:43.81 to 4:44.18.

Pendleton's Samuel Jennings won the boys javelin with 213-5, good for US#2.

In a good race between top freshmen, Sydney Collier from Skyline WA won the girls 3,200 meters in 10:28;03, holding off Crescent Valley's Emily Wisniewski, who ran 10:29.64.
